Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the Art Car Museum closing on April 28th?
Ann Harithas founded the Art Car Museum in 1998, and from that time until her passing in 2021, Mrs. Harithas provided sole support for every aspect of the museum, from operations to exhibitions. Her devotion to alternative art like art cars and her elevation of that art to museum-level status was legendary and irreplaceable.
The current owners of the museum are exploring new operational models to maintain and evolve Mrs. Harithas’s vision and legacy. While those plans are taking shape, a pause in public programming is necessary. April 28th was chosen as it allows the Art Car Museum to take part in the Houston Art Car Parade on April 13th before closing out its last exhibit, “The Creative Era of Ann Harithas”.
What will happen to the Art Cars in the collection?
In keeping with Mrs. Harithas’s passion for making art available to everyone, current plans call for the continued maintenance and various opportunities for viewing of the art cars that Ann Harithas collected and created throughout much of her life. These opportunities include being displayed on a rotating basis at Five Points Museum in Victoria, Texas, as well as at Houston venues such as the Houston Art Car Parade and community events whenever practical.
What will happen to the building on Heights Boulevard?
The extraordinary building housing the Art Car Museum is a form of art in itself. The owners are considering many options for maintaining a creative association between the building designed and enhanced by David Best in the 1990s and future plans for the institution.
Where and when can I learn more?
As the owners of the Art Car Museum work with local and regional arts organizations to explore options for the next chapter, they look forward to sharing those plans as soon as they can. Please keep checking this website as the official source of information about the Art Car Museum.
